James Turnbull

New Oboe Music Project

James is deeply committed to expanding the oboe repertoire. Composers including Patrick Hawes, Thomas Hewitt Jones and Norbert Froehlich have written for him. He has also worked closely with composers Michael Berkeley, John Casken, Jonathan Dove, John Woolrich, Thea Musgrave and Tansy Davies on their compositions for oboe.

If you have a piece for oboe that you would like to send James, please feel free to contact him directly using the contact page or the email address info@james-turnbull.com

In 2015, James set up The New Oboe Music Project which aims to promote existing new music for the oboe and encourage more composers to write for the instrument. The project has a number of aims:

  1. To commission new oboe repertoire by raising money through existing charitable foundations and crowd funding donations.
  2. To raise awareness of existing oboe repertoire written since the turn of the 21st century.
  3. To encourage emerging composers to write for the oboe by establishing the Léon Goossens Oboe Prize. The inaugural prize is in 2016 and will run biennially.
