Aside from his performing interests, James is dedicated to broadening the appeal of the oboe and encouraging young people to start learning the instrument. To this end, he has begun an education and outreach project called ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Oboe’. Launched in 2012, this initiative has seen James tour numerous schools in the UK to promote the oboe and its repertoire. This will be accompanied by the launch of a new website LearnToPlayTheOboe.com for January 2013.
James is very passionate about teaching the oboe and currently teaches at the Royal College of Music Junior Department as well as various schools across Southeast England. He also teaches private students throughout the London area and is available for group coaching and masterclasses.
James has experience in leading workshops and various outreach projects through his experience with the Worshipful Company of Musicians, the London Philharmonic Orchestra Future Firsts scheme and also the Southbank Sinfonia. He has led workshops for groups both at primary and secondary school level. James’ work in music education has been recognised by the Musician’s Company who awarded him the inaugural Patricia Prindl Prize.
